Barcodes For Mobile Web Surfing

Clearly one of the difficulties in accessing the Mobile Web from your cell phone is how to input the URL (Link). You could of course painstakingly type it in on the keyboard. That is prone to error so the technologists are seeking other solutions.

A cell phone is designed to work with sound so voice recognition software might seem to be the obvious answer. Unfortunately in places where there is high background noise, the final result can in some cases be ludicrous. Unless the software has been trained to recognize the voice, even a mild accent can throw the results off. Some experts raise serious questions about the practicality of this approach.

Many phones now come equipped with a camera and this perhaps provides the most error-free input arrangement. The use of barcodes to designate the link or URL is now finding increasing acceptance. As Matthew Wall reports New barcodes on signs, posters and the like are expanding the mobile web.

Imagine waiting at the bus shelter idly reading the poster for a new blockbuster film. You whip out your camera phone and snap a barcode-like image on the poster. Software in your phone decodes this and takes you to a website where you can watch the trailer and find out more about the film. Sound cool?

It all sounds very appealing.

Mobile internet seems to be the way of the future. I have never spent more than a few seconds using mobile web - its way to expensive for what it is. Why not use a computer?
