If you thought Mobile was all the rage, then think again. In keyword click terms, tmobile or t-mobile is six times more clicked than mobile according to Overture. That may come as a surprise but there is chaotic and explosive growth in the mobile world. This is the space that StayGoLinks will be exploring. Exciting things are happening and there are exciting opportunities. Surprisingly the mobile world is developing in some ways independently of what is going on in the regular Internet world
T-Mobile for example is a website devoted entirely to Cell phones and wireless plans. Their tagline is ‘Get More with T-Mobile’. They are appealing to that same young crowd that would find Hiptop/Sidekick, WINKsite or The Link their preferred way of getting the most they can from the mobile world. This is what is driving the much more rapid growth of the mobile world versus the significant growth of the regular Internet. Even in Canada the growth is impressive but the European market growth rate is almost unbelievable.
This is not to say that mobile is solely the province of the young. The benefits of mobile technology can make major improvements in workforce productivity and that is a sector that Microsoft Windows Mobile aims to capitalize on. Many others are pushing to get their share and this is a development that is being promoted by the W3C through its Mobile Web Initiative. The aim is to ensure that standards are adopted that will ensure the maximum cross-compatibility within the mobile world.
This represents quite a challenge. As Mitch Joel points out, different Canadian web developers see the Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0 from completely different points of view. An IT Business article includes the following range of opinions from Canadian developer.
- “There’s a minimum feature set that should be on any Web presentation that caters to mobile devices. In particular, designers need to allow for the smaller screens and restricted bandwidth that phones and PDAs offer.”
- “Unless a business is pursuing the youth market, web browsing using mobile devices is a non-issue,” another said. “It’s a technologist-driven red herring.”
It looks as though the rapid growth of the mobile market will give us all a very bumpy ride.
