Gphone or Goophone - it’s on its way.

The latest report from the BBC announces Google sidesteps mobile reports. Apparently a Google statement said: “What our users and partners are telling us is that they want Google search and Google applications on mobile, and we are working hard every day to deliver that.”

Google would not say if its efforts included plans for a handset. Or as the BBC put it, Google has refused to deny mounting speculation that it is working to produce its own brand mobile phone. Reports suggest that the web giant is developing a series of “GPhones”, centred on its mobile services, such as search, e-mail and maps.

Presumably some midnight or other, like the launch of the latest Harry Potter book, Google will take off the wraps. It has worked amazingly for Harry Potter so perhaps it will be equally successful for the Google Gphone.

From a strategic, big picture point of view, it seems inevitable that there should be a Gphone. Let us count the reasons:

  • The economic potential of the Mobile Web will far exceed that of the desktop PC Web.
  • There is intense competition among the wireless service providers and among the cell phone producers with no dominant players in either case.
  • There is only limited and partial acceptance of browser standards among the players.
  • There is massive demand, particularly in the developing world, for economic mobile devices (cell phones).
  • The Mobile Web user experience via any current mobile device is rarely satisfactory.

These reasons are so strong that there is no question that Google will be unveiling its Gphone at the appropriate time. Following the launch, the current players will need to decide whether they are in alliance with, or in opposition to, Google. Google has clearly decided that keeping everything behind the veil will maximize its opportunities once all is revealed.
