A comment by Ben C to the previous post on Screen Resolution and Stylesheets showed that there’s much more to resolutions than just the pixel count. He pointed out that “Microsoft?s implementation of VGA is designed to make the display very attractive and readable rather than cram true VGA into a small screen.”

VGA (Video Graphics Array) is a video standard, which is an industry based standard. It supports 320×200 resolution at 256 colors, or 640×480 at 16 colors. Super VGA is the 1024 x 768 standard. Exploring this, I came across an excellent evaluation of what these high resolutions deliver written by James Kendrick in his blog, JKontherun. He has quite a cute tag line, Using Mobile Devices Since They Weighed 30 lb. He wrote the following in Some thoughts on screen resolution and ultra-portables.

I hope OEMs are paying attention and listening to user accounts like this one. Higher resolution is not always better when it comes to ultra-portable devices designed to be used in the hands. You have to be able to effortlessly read the screen when lots of text is displayed or the extra resolution quickly becomes a negative. Now lets see a 1024 x 600 Origami. That would be just perfect.

So the complexity increases as we consider the choices manufacturers have in how high resolution screens should be used.
