The iPhone makes the Mobile Web a reality.

Even if the iPhone had not been brought to market, the Mobile Web would have seen an explosive growth much faster than was seen with the regular Internet. That is true despite the technological difficulties. After all surfing the Mobile Web on a PDA is not the most user satisfying experience. What drives the growth is the market demand. People need information while they’re on the move. That’s all there is to it.

Now we have the iPhone being brilliantly marketed and everyone wants one. What had been a dream is now a reality. In a sense the iPhone is a proof of concept that the Mobile Web can work. Even though some features will leave some dissatisfied, on the whole it’s a very credible start. Now the mobile web applications will flood out, given that the Mobile Web is no longer a tomorrow thing.

This week has seen two such applications. The first is Google AJAX Search for the iPhone. This now includes support for web search, custom search engines, image search, Google News, blog search, book search, Google Maps and video search.

The second is a set of applications called Leaflets. Brian Fling of Blue Flavor in explaining Why we made Leaflets also sees the iPhone as the leading edge of a Mobile Web evolution.

I?ve been stating that ?Mobile will revolutionize the way we gather and interact with information in the next three years.? I believe that the iPhone is the catalyst that will begin the next evolution in the Information Age.

It won?t be done by Apple or the iPhone, but by people. They will realize the benefit of immediate access to information relevant to their task or location. Their perception and expectation of what mobile technology can do will change. Which will mean how we interact with information will change as well. The iPhone is the first device to spark this type of imagination with people. The bar has been set and everything that comes after will only make the mobile medium better.
