I don't think you need a .mobi extension. Just maybe and alternative layout of pages on the same websites (for mobile phones) Also the mobile browsers should be able to handle flash, JavaScript etc. I dont think designers should be restricted to only developing very basic websites for the sake of mobile devices. The internet is for PC's and converting website for mobile devices is in mo a waist of time...
