ReTweets Are The New Currency Of The Web as Michael Arrington noted. That makes the launch of a new search engine Topsy, which had been in stealth development for three years, particularly propititious.

Links are sorted by those that Twitter users are sending around the most, weighted in favor of links sent by more influential Twitter users. You can sort results over all time (going back to September 2008), last month, week, day or hour. Results show popular links and also the most influential users tweeting about that topic. Click on that user and you’ll see all their tweets about the topic.

Topsy isn’t looking at the number of followers in determining Influence. Rather, Influence is gained when others retweet links you’ve sent out. And when you retweet others, you lose a little Influence. So the more people retweet you, the more Influence you gain. So, yes indeed, retweets are the new currency on the web.

Getting RTs for serious topics

If your topic is particularly newsworthy or appeals to the masses, then getting a large number of ReTweets is not very surprising. If you are writing on something that has a limited appeal, how do you get your readers to tell others via Twitter about it. What tweaked my interest was that a recent tweet about a blog post got 30 ReTweets at this time when checking via a Topsy search for ‘PageRank Null Hypothesis’ (note – some of these had different short URLs). The Tweet was as follows:

Pl. RT – #PageRank Calculation – Null Hypothesis http://cli.gs/tNV9Ny – Is this how #Google does it? #seo

Topsy even indicates that there were 16 associated ReTweets of the corresponding Sphinn entry. Others may find the reasons for this good performance of interest and value.

Automatic Tweets from the Blogging software

If your blogging software is set up to automatically send a tweet to Twitter when the blog is published, then you should make sure that the Titles ReTweet Well.

You may wish to add appropriate hashtags to your post title as well, although we have more to say on that below. Chris Brogan also had some related tips on how to Spread Your Wings And Get More Retweet Action.

Hand-crafted Tweets

There is no harm in letting the software do its job, but it may well be appropriate to take its output and make a more twitter-visible tweet. Louise Doherty has a formula for getting retweeted and that is a good start. However there are some further tips that are worth mentioning.

The most important is of course to make sure the title has words that are likely to draw your readers interest. In the above example, it is probable that the phrase ‘Null Hypothesis’ tweaked the interest of all those who have struggled through their statistics courses and wondered how it could possibly come up here. If you can find a short catchy phrase like that, you are a lot farther ahead.

Working the Hashtags

A hashtag such as #google ensures that all those who watch out for tweets that have been labeled with the google hashtag are likely to see your tweet. It is a way of targeting a particular audience. Which hashtags are worth using? Clearly popular hashtags are the only ones. You can get an idea on this by doing a Twitter search for say #google.

Check out how old the tweet is at the bottom of the search results page. Currently for #google it is about 2 hours ago, which is fairly good. You will get the same result for #seo. #pagerank on the other hand is about 7 days ago, so it is still worth considering but is less popular. Just to give a point of comparison, a search for a current trending topic such as “Swine Flu” shows tweets at the bottom of the page that are only from 2 minutes ago.

The other point that is worth mentioning is that the addition of hashtags does not seem to influence twitter searches so that a search for Google will include entries with #google as well. In other words the ‘#’ is ignored in the Twitter search for the non-tagged version of the word.

Getting a little help from your friends

Having crafted the best ReTweet-able Tweet you can, all that is left to do is to seek a little help from your friends. If you have done your work well, they will probably be delighted to do their bit.

An oxymoron means that two words forming part of a phrase represent opposites or are contradictory. George Carlin popularized Military Intelligence and Jumbo Shrimp as examples of oxymorons. Other somewhat famous ones are Authentic Reproduction, Cautiously Optimistic, Civil Disobedience, Deafening Silence, Detailed Summary, Friendly Fire, Honest Crook, Humane Slaughter, Metal Wood, Tough Love, White Lie and the list could go on and on.

Social Media is another such oxymoron. Media most often is assumed to be mass media such as TV or radio. Social on the other hand implies relationships between individuals. The masses versus individuals – there is the contradiction

The social media scale

You are perhaps unaware of the social media scale since we are introducing it here. The scale is defined by that oxymoronic name really. In a way the two words represent the two extremes of the scale.

At the Media end of the scale, we have the minimally social ones, which merely allow you to vote on items that are classified by the medium. Examples of this are reddit.com and digg.com.

At the other end of the scale, we have social media that are online spaces where you can ‘meet’ and interact with others. Facebook and LinkedIn are examples of this. Others will be found to fall between these two extremes. StumbleUpon for example is closer to reddit but does provide for messages between friends.

Where Is Twitter On the Social Media Scale?

The interesting anomaly in all this is Twitter. Twitter itself was very much at the social end of the scale in its genesis. The objective was to let your close followers know your current status. Many still use it that way.

However some participants have abandoned that approach. They seek to get the maximum number of followers by following as many other people as they can. Since some people have arranged that automatically they will follow anyone who follows them, this approach can almost allow you to create your own mass medium.

If you want to check out some data on people using Twitter in this way, check out the TwitterScore website. More specifically check out the Top Users. There are some very famous names there and also some top agencies such as CNN and the BBC. Scrolling down you will see some people who clearly have worked hard to create an audience for themselves. At # 200 at the moment, for example, you have Jonathan Nafarrete, who is “Just some guy. Photographer and social media consultant” and who has 63,553 followers.

The fact that Twitter is both social and a mass media is perhaps why many people are having a difficulty knowing how best to be involved.

Update

Two news items about the Mobile Web bring to mind that troubling truth about Screen Resolution. It is like the Gordian knot of web development.

Web designers now regard the minimum screen resolution for a desktop PC as 1024 pixels by 768 pixels. On the other hand (most appropriately), a smart phone may be as large as 480 pixels by 320 pixels. Looking at the cell phone, you are down to possibly 128 pixels by 160 pixels.

The mathematics of this mean that if you try to look at a desktop PC web page on your smart phone you must scroll down 5 times as much as you did on the PC. The cell phone is even worse forcing you to scroll down 38 times as much.

Nevertheless, the word is that The Mobile Web is the New Hangout. One indicator is that the Opera Mini Browser Sees ‘Explosive Growth’

Opera claims that the browser has seen a whopping 157% year-over-year growth, with more than 23 million people using Opera Mini in March 2009. This represents a 12.1% increase from February 2009 and more than 157% up from March 2008. The page view figures are impressive too, with users viewing more than 8.6 billion pages during March 2009, up 17.4 per cent on the previous month, with year over year page views increasing 255%.

We can assume that this did not involve all that scrolling down that would be involved if they are looking at desktop PC designed web pages.

Not surprisingly given this explosive growth, the BBC is asking, Is the mobile web coming of age? The article has some most interesting quotes.

EBay’s senior director of platforms and mobile Max Mancini states:

The first hype cycle on mobile failed because people wanted to recreate the desktop on the phone. The mobile device is not an alternative view into the web. It is a different experience. It might be an extension to different things on the web, but the real winning application on mobile will be the things that will be very unique to what you can get from a mobile device like the camera, the location, the address book and the communications.

Ernest Doku, of comparison site Omio.com, agrees:

We should not be looking at replicating the desktop on mobile. What people want on their phone is very different from what they want to experience seated in front of a PC.

Others are of a like mind. One of the most insightful comments is from Sir Tim Berners Lee, who told the BBC:

In developing countries it’s going to be exciting because the Mobile Web is the only way that a lot of people will actually get to see the Internet at all.

Google’s vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra said the migration to mobile was a natural progression for the world’s leader in internet search.

The entire world is moving to mobile and mobile is the most personal of all personal computers. This year we are going to sell more internet-connected phones as an industry than the entire notebook market. These devices will become our agents, support us with advice, be our friends.

The explosive growth is not new. Last year it was noted that Small sites drive big traffic on the mobile Web. The question was asked whether website owners were ready for the Mobile Web, which was the Next Big Thing.

The preferred solution at that time was to design websites with The One Web Principle in mind. By a process of Adaptation, the website would deliver the appropriate web page content dependent on the mobile device that was attempting to display the web page.

That is a very challenging approach. Clearly there are some things that should be avoided in mobile web design. Some major effort must be invested if Web Sites Are To Adapt to Mobile Access.

Perhaps a surer route is the approach that some adopt, which is to have a number of parallel websites, each designed for a particular range of devices. It is what has been called The Multi-Web Practice.

You may be aware that the Internet is becoming very crowded. Google will attempt to help you get where you want to go, but is having increasing difficulties. Part of that is Google’s doing. Their methodology depends on links from other web pages, so naturally, everyone is producing web pages. Indeed, some use computer software to generate thousands of web pages to influence their Google ranking. Since Google will only use computer based algorithms, it becomes a battle of the giant computers.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web, seems to be acknowledging that his protg has problems. He has accepted one of the Knight News Challenge 2008 awards for a project that will create a technology to give users more information about the origins and sourcing of digital content. He will be working with the BBC and Reuters on what has been dubbed “source tagging“.

Tags To Bring Order To The Cyber Sphere

Tagging certainly seems to be something that has real potential in helping us all navigate our way through the World Wide Web. Tags do of course come in two flavors. You can take a body of text and use a computer to determine what are the most frequently used terms. That is one way and it may be the route that Sir Tim is following. What is much more powerful is to encourage authors to choose a few tags that they feel will best represent their work. Thankfully this version seems to be attracting more and more attention, perhaps given the problems that Google is having with computer based algorithms.

A good example of the approach can be seen in the excellent blog of Kate Trgovac. Just look at her post on links for 2008-05-13. You will find for every entry she has added tags. If you wish to see more on what she believes is important on any given tag, then you can click through on that tag. There you will find the favorites she has collected, which are typified by that tag. She is using the website, del.icio.us, to hold these favorites. That is a free service and anyone can do it.

Picturing Tags – The Tag Cloud

If you want to get a sense of what Kate Trgovac feels is important and worth tagging, how can you best do that? The del.icio.us website does give a listing of all the tags she has used (1203 in all at the moment) with the numbers of web pages for each tag. Such a long listing is a little indigestible, so a visual approach seems more appropriate. This is where the tag cloud comes in. You can see a mini-example at the top of the right sidebar. Perhaps we should mention that the tagcloud.com website is somewhat confusing here, since it seems to be only a register of RSS newsfeeds.

If you’re working with del.icio.us, it would be nice to be able to easily display a tag cloud of your favorites. Nick Bouton seems to have attempted that in 2005 but apparently ran into problems with the server capabilities of the del.icio.us website.

It is perhaps an indication of the attraction of tag clouds that a number of people have worked on appropriate software. Eric (engtech) developed one in 2007, which was somewhat complex. If you can accept complexity, then you may even be tempted to use a Flash Tag Cloud WordPress plugin that Alex Cristache found. It is one developed by Roy Tanck and is called WP Cumulus, in a pleasing play of words on the notion of a tag cloud.

WordPress Has A Tag Cloud Feature

Luckily for those who are enthusiastic about tag clouds, and are authors of WordPress blogs, the whole situation has become dramatically simpler. With the latest upgrade (version 2.5), tags are now much more effectively supported. In particular, there is now a template tag function, wp_tag_cloud. That makes the addition of a mini tag cloud to a sidebar almost child’s play. You may have noticed a small example in the right sidebar when you arrived at this blog.

Making Your Very Easy WordPress Tag Cloud Web Page

Displaying the full set of tags generated for a blog is clearly inappropriate for a sidebar display. What is much preferable is a web page displaying the full set of tags. As it turns out, with a little ingenuity there is a very simple way of creating such a web page. This is done by creating a specific page template just for that page, which we suggest should be named tags.php. A suitable code for this in the basic Kubrics theme is shown below.

tags.php

<?php /*
Template Name: Tag Cloud
*/ ?>

<?php get_header(); ?>

<div id="content" class="narrowcolumn">

<?php if ( function_exists('wp_tag_cloud') ) : ?>
<div style="margin:25px;border:1px solid #111;padding:15px;">
<ul style="margin:0 0 0 8px;padding:0;">
<?php wp_tag_cloud('smallest=8&largest=24&number=0'); ?>
</ul>
</div>
<?php endif; ?>

<p style="margin-left:33px;">
Tags:
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/tagcloud" rel="tag">tagcloud</a>
in Technorati |
<a href="http://del.icio.us/bwelford/tagcloud" rel="tag">tagcloud</a>
in del.icio.us</p>
</div>

<?php get_sidebar(); ?>

<?php get_footer(); ?>

An example of the output can be seen in the tag cloud page for this blog. The only point to note is that the tags shown below the tag cloud are not a natural feature of a WordPress blog page. Wordpress posts do have tags, but WordPress pages do not, unless they are added manually as is done here. The left-hand tagcloud tag for Technorati is applicable to all tag clouds and can be left as is. The right-hand link for the del.icio.us tagcloud can be modified to link to the individual author’s del.icio.us tagcloud favorites, if so desired.

You can copy and paste the above code to create your own tags.php file and it can be FTP-ed to your own Theme folder. The properties of this file should be set to Read and Write for the Owner and Read only for others.

Once the tags.php file has been uploaded, the Tag Cloud web page is very easily created as a New Page in the ‘Write Page’ Subpanel. Select the template to be used at the very bottom of the Subpanel from the drop-down list. Its name is Tag Cloud. In the Title field, type a suitable Title such as ‘Tag Cloud for this Blog’. Within the Content field, type the text which should appear as the heading within the Page and this is all that is required. This could appear as follows:

<h2>Tag Cloud for this Blog</h2>

The template will then automatically add in the complete tag cloud together with the two tag links for tagcloud which appear below it.

Once the Tag Cloud Web Page has been created, a link to it can then be displayed at an appropriate point on the Home Page. Visitors to the blog can then easily use it to get a sense of what subjects the blog covers.

We’re No Worse Than The Other Guy.

Tom Peters suggested that for many big companies the words to the right could be the company motto emblazoned in gold letters over the entrance. He was describing banks but according to a recent survey on customer service the cell phone companies are the lowest on the totem pole.

Politicians like to take popular decisions. So it was no great surprise to hear yesterday’s announcement from Ottawa that it will hold an auction of the wireless spectrum in May 2008. This could mean more competition and lower cellphone rates for Canadians next year. Industry Minister Jim Prentice said that about 105 megahertz of spectrum will be sold to bidders. Forty megahertz will be set aside for newcomers to the industry. Not surprisingly Telus described this as “deeply disappointing” news. I am sure that Bell and Rogers would feel the same way.

The three of them of course form an oligopoly.

An oligopoly exists when a few companies dominate an industry. This concentration often leads to collusion among manufacturers, so that prices are set by agreement rather than by the operation of the supply and demand mechanism.

Canadians pay more to use their cell phones and this is particularly so for broadband data transmission rates. Undoubtedly this has held back the development of the Mobile Web in Canada. This is particularly disastrous for an industry that should be one of Canada’s strengths.

Not surprisingly this news has been greeted with applause by many. What the oligopolists do not realize is that poor customer service creates rebels. After all as someone has suggested, bad news travels 10 times as fast as good news. Many consumers are just waiting to get the cell phone service they deserve. Any well-funded newcomer who can deliver the cell phone goods will find an army of evangelists waiting to spread the word.

The real Answer.com has no answers: it’s inactive.

We recently announced that AnswerTips Comes To BPWrap, our associated blog. We’ve been so pleased at how well AnswerTips performs that we’ve added it here too (top right) and on the other SMM properties. We think it’s a very neat gizmo and all credit is due to Answer.com .. oops that should read Answers.com. The gizmo has since then been removed in an upgrade of the websites.

You see in telling the world we did say Courtesy of Answer.com. Our error was quickly pointed out to us by Marjolein Hoekstra of the CleverClogs Blog and by Gina Larson of Answers.com. The CleverClogs Blog was one of the beta testing websites for the AnswerTips gizmo. Within minutes the correction was made and the news feed aggregators repinged. However for a short time Google and others were working with that Answer.com version of the title.

Perhaps the mistake was a natural one. I decided to do some exploring. It reminds me of a related domain. Some were concerned as Ask Jeeves sacked Jeeves and became the simple Ask.com. What a great domain name that is. I for one always felt that it was almost a no-brainer to go with simplicity. Of course you should Ask your questions. As far as one can tell it has been a very positive move. An alternative way of responding to questions is to give an Answer. So Answer.com would seem to be an ideal domain to do this. Surprisingly typing in www.answer.com currently gives a Server Not Found message. The domain does exist as a Internic WhoIs search will confirm with the following information:

Domain Name: ANSWER.COM
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
Name Server: GATEWAY1.PLATINUM.COM
Name Server: GATEWAY2.PLATINUM.COM
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Updated Date: 26-jun-2006
Creation Date: 27-feb-1992
Expiration Date: 28-feb-2008

Why would someone sit on such a fine domain name?

Doing a Google search for “answer.com” gives over 90,000 web pages. Some of these are composite domain names that include answer.com. However many show that precise domain name, answer.com. Even if there is no active website at that domain, many mistakenly think so. Perhaps it’s only a small surprise to find that the #1 item in this search is the Answers.com website. There is no mention of ‘answer.com’ on the answers.com website but the Google cache shows that it appears in links to the website. Try the same search in Yahoo!, MSN/Live or Ask and you’ll get the same answer. Perhaps in our confusion I and many others have helped spread the illusion that, if you type answer.com, you really intended to find the answers.com website.

People now a days don’t often type in a domain in the address bar. They more often type the name in the Google search field. Or they click on a favourite link. This tendency will be even stronger as people use their cell phones to surf the mobile Web.

Does this mean the value of these shorter domains will be reduced? They really will not bring the traffic they used to. At this time, the keyword “answer.com” would seem to be the property of Answers.com, at least in the eyes of the major search engines. Given my satisfaction with Answers.com for their AnswerTips, I think they’ve earned that answer.com visibility.

Network professionals walk a tight rope, as secure mobile computing is a complex business. Mobile computing, especially when associated with the plethora of handheld devices on the market today, is a network manager’s headache when it comes to security.

The Big Interview: dotMobi’s Alexa Raad is changing the way people think about the mobile internet
Despite the prevalence of mobile phones equipped with web-browsing capabilities, surfing the mobile internet hasn’t really taken off. DobMobi hopes to change the way people think about the mobile internet by providing the tools and domain name for companies to build web pages designed to be viewed on small mobile devices.

Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox can be relied upon to stir controversy. Today he pronounces on the 1024×768 versus 800×600 dilemma.

Many will read his article on Screen Resolution and Page Layout and be in agreement. His simple advice is clear. Optimize for 1024×768, but don’t design solely for this size. Have a fluid design that works at any resolution, from 800×600 to 1280×1024 and beyond. IMHO that simple advice may be clear but it’s wrong. Just look at the prior posts on Good Resolutions and Screen Resolution and Style sheets to see why simple can be too simple.

Even within his own article, he has some interesting contradictions. On wide screens, he says the following:

Big monitors are the easiest way to increase white-collar productivity, and anyone who makes at least $50,000 per year ought to have at least 1600×1200 screen resolution. Starting at 1600×1200, users rarely stretch their browser windows to the full screen because few websites work well on such a wide canvas. Big windows are magic for working on spreadsheets, graphic design, and many other tasks, but not for the current paradigm of Web pages.

Then on narrow screens he says the following:

So, what about tiny screens, such as those found on mobile devices? A liquid design should scale all the way down to a phone, but don’t assume that this is how you should deliver your company’s mobile user experience. Mobile environments are special; to optimize for them, you must design a separate service that provides fewer features, is written even more concisely, and is more context aware.

Web pages can get too wide to read easily.

This whole field is so complex that I think we’ve got to consider that new paradigm of Web pages that he suggests is needed. Until we get that, I do not believe that fluid designs are robust enough to cope with all those different screen widths that may be encountered. Very long lines of text just do not work. If only Internet Explorer had supported the max-width concept in CSS, then Jakob Nielsen could have suggested flexible design within a maximum width. It appears Internet Explorer Version 7, when it comes will support max-width, so perhaps he will change his advice at that time. Now that would be much more acceptable.

At Microsoft’s annual analyst briefing, chief software architect Ray Ozzie spelt out the company’s vision of putting the Internet and hosted services at the centre of its universe. It has much in common with the converged communications vision that the telecoms sector has been touting for some time.

Clearly the biggest problem in trying to get both Desktop PCs and Mobile Devices to display web pages in a satisfactory way is the vastly different size of screen. There’s an excellent AListApart article on that, which describes the problem as follows:

Because their screens are small and the device may not always have a horizontal scrolling mechanism, overflow in the horizontal direction is a major problem on handhelds. In addition to letting content wrap into a single column, you need to make sure wide elements fit the narrow screen.

The solution which the article describes well is to use different CSS style sheets. You include both a style sheet for ‘screen‘ that applies to Desktop PCs and a style sheet for ‘handheld‘ that applies to Mobile Devices. It sounds fine in theory. However look at that first Hot Mobile News Item. Microsoft Mobile is touting the Dell Axim X51v. It looks absolutely magnificent. It has a Display Resolution of 640 x 480. It would be a shame with all that resolution to put everything in one column.

So we have a Mobile Device that shouldn’t really behave like a ‘handheld’. Has anyone got a solution for that?
