World Standards Day is celebrated each year on 14 October. It pays tribute to the efforts of the thousands of experts worldwide who collaborate within ITU, IEC and ISO to develop voluntary international standards that facilitate trade, spread knowledge and share technological advances. You can find more details in the Press Release that was issued in September.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency, aims to bring the benefits of new telecommunication technologies to all the world’s inhabitants and facilitate the worldwide standardization of telecommunications. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) aim to develop a consensus on worldwide standards in almost all realms of human endeavour, from aircraft and space vehicles to basic units of measurement and test methods.

It is to be hoped that the ITU will be successful in furthering the standardization process as it applies to the Mobile Internet. It certainly needs all the help it can get.
